Understanding Sanctioned vs. Unsanctioned Soccer Camps & Academies

As part of Big Country Soccer Association’s (BCSA) commitment to safe, developmentally-appropriate, and high-quality soccer experiences, it’s important that our members understand the distinction between sanctioned and unsanctioned soccer camps and academies.

What is a Sanctioned Camp or Academy?

Sanctioned camps and academies are those that:

  • Meet the Standards for Quality Soccer (SQS) as set by Alberta Soccer and Canada Soccer;

  • Align with Safe Sport principles to protect the well-being of all participants;

  • Provide certified, qualified, and accountable coaching staff;

  • Are covered under Alberta Soccer/BCSA insurance, ensuring liability and injury protection;

  • Operate under the oversight and endorsement of their local member organization and BCSA.

What is an Unsanctioned Camp or Academy?

Unsanctioned programs are not approved or recognized by BCSA or Alberta Soccer, and therefore:

  • Do not meet verified coaching, safety, or insurance standards;

  • Place players, coaches, and families at risk due to lack of regulatory oversight;

  • Offer no insurance coverage for injuries or incidents, unless private insurance is obtained;

  • May misrepresent their credentials or programs to appear official;

  • Operate outside of the developmental framework that supports long-term player growth.

Why It Matters

Engaging with unsanctioned programs puts participants at risk — not just physically, but developmentally and legally. These programs are not accountable to any soccer governing body, meaning there is no assurance of quality, conduct, or responsibility.

As a member of BCSA, we strongly encourage all families to verify that any camp or academy is sanctioned before enrolling.

Sanctioned Camps & Academies Within BCSA

The following member organizations currently operate sanctioned soccer camps and academies within Big Country Soccer Association:

  • Didsbury Minor Soccer

  • Sundre Soccer Club

  • Crossfield Minor Soccer Association (CMSA)

These programs have met the requirements for sanctioning and are approved by BCSA to deliver high-quality, safe, and developmentally aligned soccer experiences.

Interested in Starting a Camp or Academy?

If your club is considering launching a sanctioned soccer camp or academy, we’re here to help!

We encourage all member organizations to reach out to Duncan Hawkins, Vice-President of BCSA and President of Crossfield Minor Soccer Association, for support and guidance.

Duncan has helped lead one of the district’s sanctioned academy programs and can provide insight, templates, and lessons learned to help ensure your initiative meets sanctioning standards and delivers a positive experience for your players and community.

By building on the experience of those who have already blazed the trail, your club can confidently move forward, knowing you have the tools and support needed to succeed.
