The Future of Rural Soccer: What We’re Building Together
By Big Country Soccer Association
Rural soccer is changing — and we’re leading that change together.
At Big Country Soccer Association, we’ve seen firsthand the power of community. From the cheers on the sidelines to the dedication of volunteer coaches and coordinators, rural soccer thrives because of people like you. But as the game grows, so must we. The future of rural soccer in Alberta is not just about keeping up — it’s about leading the way in how we serve and support our kids, families, and communities.
A Unified Vision for Growth
Our district spans across proud and passionate communities, each bringing something unique to the game. But to truly thrive, we must be unified in our direction. That means aligning around a shared vision: to build a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive soccer environment that offers every player a chance to grow — from grassroots to high-performance pathways.
Our long-term goal is clear: to create a strong and resilient soccer ecosystem that keeps kids in the game longer, fosters community pride, and opens doors for players of all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s U5s learning to kick a ball or U17s chasing college dreams, every level matters. Every child matters.
Embracing the Standards for Quality Soccer
To make this vision a reality, we are embracing Canada Soccer’s Standards for Quality Soccer (SQS) — a nationally recognized framework designed to support the long-term player development of every child, coach, and club. These standards are not about red tape. They are about elevating the experience: safer environments, better coaching, inclusive programs, and more opportunity for growth.
Each community plays a role in this. From how we organize our programming, train our coaches, and communicate with parents, to how we collaborate across town lines — it all contributes to the bigger picture. SQS isn’t a destination; it’s the foundation for a future where rural soccer is as respected, competitive, and sustainable as anywhere else in Canada.
Building High-Performance Pathways — Without Leaving Home
One of our boldest goals is to open up higher competitive levels of play within the district. For too long, rural players have had to leave their communities to access elite programs. We believe they shouldn’t have to. By working together, investing in coach development, and centralizing talent pathways, we can build competitive teams right here at home.
But this only works if we’re united. No single community can do it alone. When we combine our strengths — whether it’s field space, coaching resources, or administrative support — we build something that none of us could build alone.
What You Can Do
Whether you're a coach, a parent, a board member, or a supporter — you’re part of this vision. Here's how you can contribute:
Get Informed: Learn about the SQS framework and how it benefits your community.
Share the Vision: Help others see that we’re not losing local identity — we’re growing something bigger together.
Support Coach Education: Encourage your community to invest in training, mentorship, and development.
Collaborate: Reach out to neighboring clubs and look for shared opportunities. We rise together.
Believe in the Big Picture: Change takes time, but every small step moves us forward.
Together, We Are Big Country
This isn’t just about soccer. It’s about community, pride, and giving our kids the best possible environment to learn, grow, and thrive. The future of rural soccer is ours to shape — and it’s brighter when we build it together.
Let’s keep moving forward. Let’s build the future — together.
